MAGA is dead as a political movement. How did we get here?

MAGA is dead. When was the exact moment that the political movement changed entirely? Was it the moment that Charlie Kirk was publicly assassinated? Was it the moment Trump decided to start a war with Iran? Or is it due to the litany of broken campaign promises and economic turbulence that have followed? In this analysis, we examine the reality that MAGA as a political movement is dead, or, at a minimum, that the political movement now represents something different entirely.

A New War in Iran

On February 28, 2026, the war with Iran began when President Trump ordered airstrikes in Iran. This action completely diverged from Trump’s campaign promises to avoid “endless, stupid wars.” Then, on April 20, 2026, longtime ally of Donald Trump, political pundit Tucker Carlson, apologized to the American public for his support of the President and stated he believed Trump abandoned his base and campaign promises. Tucker Carlson has not stayed quiet about his conversations with the President preceding the decision to strike Iran. He has stated numerous times that President Trump did not initially want to go to war, and that he was surrounded by “bad advice” (specifically from the Mossad) following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Broken Campaign Promises

Regardless, the outcome is the same–America holds 40 trillion dollars in national debt, gas prices are up 30-50% depending on where you live, and global political destabilization continues to rise with the wars in Iran and Ukraine. The rise of AI, data centers, and the Agenda 2030 surveillance state continues to be implemented, regardless of the stated goals of the MAGA movement:

• Secure the American border
• Mass deportations of illegal immigrants
• No new endless wars, ending the war in Ukraine (Avoid WW3)
• American infrastructure projects
• Reinvestment in American manufacturing and businesses (Trump’s tariffs and local investments have seen results, but confusion in the market from lackluster SCOTUS decisions has hampered these efforts)
• Balance the budget, lower the national debt
• Lower gas prices
• Lower crime
• Address H1B Visa Fraud
• Public Corruption Scandals: Clinton Emails/Corruption (2016), Epstein Files Release/Transparency
• Curbing political extremism

Many of these goals have been tempered due to rogue federal judges and the Supreme Court. However, the majority of the stated goals have been sidelined due to the war in Iran and the seemingly endless war in Ukraine, where the United States is supplying Ukraine and NATO with munitions and war technology that is pushing Russia into a corner, where they still maintain the upper hand.

If somehow we had a time machine and went back to talk to Trump supporters in 2024 to let them know:

• Charlie Kirk will be dead by 2026
• We will be in a new war with Iran in 2026
• We will still be in a proxy war with Ukraine
• Gas prices will be almost double
• Grocery prices will continue to rise,

   

the level of anger and apathy would be palpable. Many would simply not show up to vote, which will be the likely temperament in the 2026 midterms, with Trump currently polling at 28% voter approval.

The Murder of Charlie Kirk

Largely, though, the American public on both ends of the political spectrum likely had the same sick, sad, and disgusted visceral reaction when they heard the news and watched the gruesome video of Charlie Kirk being killed at a public college event in Provo, Utah. The odd, out-of-touch public memorial that followed, which resembled more of a WWE wrestling promo than a funeral, only solidified this feeling more. In reality, this may be the exact moment that MAGA changed forever. Unlike the Trump Butler assassination attempt, this deadly outcome would permanently divide the base, based on the perceptions of what happened and the political and cultural consequences.

The American Political Divide & Schism Always Existed Within MAGA

MAGA as a political movement could be defined as a populist political movement. Many of its proponents belonged to the remnants of the Ron Paul Political Movement, whose slogan was “Restore America Now.” Linguistically and ideologically, it is very similar to “Make America Great Again.” Before the Ron Paul presidential run, Ronald Reagan also famously used the term “Make America Great Again.”

a political philosophy or movement that represents or is claimed to represent the interests of ordinary people especially against the Establishment

Yet these political movements differ in core ways. Ronald Reagan had foreign entanglements, and the remnants of his presidency culminated in both Bush presidencies, which were wholly neoconservative and advocated for the US leading the foreign policy for the entire globe, especially as it relates to America’s relationship with China and Russia. Our mistakes in Afghanistan in the 1980’s later came home to roost on September 11, 2001. And our mistakes in Iraq continued in 2003. Now, look at the current conditions created by the wars in Ukraine and Iran.

The libertarian, anti-interventionist response to the neoconservative wing of the Republican Party argued that these policies led to new wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, a huge amount of American debt, leading to a poorer, weaker America. It also argued for sound financial economics and an audit of the Federal Reserve banking system, an affront to Keynesian economics and global economic planners that caused the 2008 financial crisis.

On the left, President Obama strolled into the Presidency running on very similar campaign platforms. Especially as it relates to the anti-war response to Iraq and Afghanistan, and the financial bailouts in 2008 that rewarded banks while leaving the average American to foot the bill, he continued the wars, the drone strikes, and added to the debt. He permanently divided America by race, sex, and creed.

President Trump ran on solving all of these problems. He famously ridiculed George W Bush in 2008 for starting endless wars with nothing to show for it. He also criticized Obama and his cultural Marxism that divided the nation on race, sex, and sexual preference. In essence, he ran on running against all of the policies and problems created in the last 20 years.

Restore America Now vs Make America Great Again

The MAGA coalition was comprised of the neoconservative wing of the Republican Party that loved Donald Trump’s campaign platform that acknowledged the greatness of Ronald Reagan and his platform, the Ron Paul movement that loved the populist anti-establishment rhetoric of Donald Trump standing up to what we thought were his elite friends who were bullies (Clintons, Epstein, etc.), and independents who were apathetic about the failures of President Obama.

President Obama’s Cultural Marxism – An Apathetic Response from Independents

No, contrary to the propaganda from those at the Southern Poverty Law Center, who were allegedly caught being involved in the events of Charlottesville to paint MAGA as a racist political movement, MAGA was not motivated by racism; in fact, it was the exact opposite. Independent Americans were tired of the cultural and racial Marxism pushed by the Obama administration. Many white Americans were happy to vote for a black President. What they were not expecting was their first black President to push anti-white racism and DEI policies that harmed average white Americans in response to his election.

MAGA was never a racist political movement, or a racist response to a black president being elected, contrary to Jermaine Fowler’s recent piece “The Death of MAGA Changes What, Exactly?” It is undeniable that for President Trump to win, there were at least 5-10% of American voters who voted for President Obama and President Donald Trump. A small vocal minority that was elevated by the left and bad actors does not define a political movement. It represents an asterisk at best.

These political divides always existed within MAGA. It was glaringly obvious when half of the crowd at President Trump’s inauguration booed George W. Bush, while the other half cheered. The younger crowd that has had to deal with more economic and cultural consequences over the last 20 years of America’s political chaos booed. The boomers who were rewarded with equity from America’s housing crisis caused by Ronald Reagan’s version of amnesty for illegal immigrants cheered. They are the only generation that is benefiting from the $40 trillion in debt and endless wars.

Questioning the Charlie Kirk Assassination and the Iran War

Now, the same demographics are split among the topics of the Charlie Kirk assassination and the decision to attack Iran. Many within the younger crowd have grown to distrust Bibi Netanyahu and Israel, with glaring war crimes being committed in Gaza, Turkey, and elsewhere. There are numerous questions surrounding Charlie’s murder, such as the odd actions and words of Bibi immediately after that contradicted Charlie’s opinions, the weird public memorial, and the numerous anomalies surrounding the assassination itself.

For those distracted by the left-right paradigm, the older MAGA crowd still trusts the Trump administration’s words as words of God, and refuses to ask any questions surrounding the narrative. It is much easier to accept the reality that a lone wolf leftist Antifa type committed the crime.

Simultaneously, the base is split about the decision to go to war in Iran. Anyone who questions the Iran war or Trump’s actions is immediately labeled as “doomers” and “panicans.” The ad hominem attacks between the groups have only solidified the permanent separation.

The Death of MAGA

Regardless of either side’s opinion or perspective, the split is now permanent. The Death of MAGA will have political consequences in the November 2026 midterms and beyond.

Whether Trump’s presidency is successful is to be determined. These situations are extremely complex, and there is a lot of information the American public does not have access to. Only time will tell. But it is undeniable that the movement has been altered beyond recognition–for that reason, MAGA is dead. Will Trump right the ship? Will he have the confidence and bravery to stand up to the neoconservative wing in the Republican Party, averting disaster in both wars in Ukraine and Iran? That remains to be seen.

The reality is, we are almost a week past the War Powers Resolution Act, which requires a vote by Congress to continue both of these wars. Both wars are completely unconstitutional. America is now $40 trillion in debt due to paying for all of these illegal foreign wars. The American economy is teetering on the edge, and Americans are looking for answers–and it appears no clarity will be provided by either political party.

The political Death of MAGA is not just the death of a one-off political movement: it is the culmination of multiple failed Presidencies and ineffective Congresses that have led us to this point, and it could ultimately mean the destruction of America as a whole. The Marxist historians who have seen this as an opportunity to gloat about the political failure of a conservative Presidency have tunnel vision and are failing to see the full picture of the political and economic transition of the last 25 years.
